SUMMARY:Rich Pickings presents: Lolita [complex]
DESCRIPTION:Short film and psychoanalysis.\n \nRich Pickings produce occa
sional curated days of diversions and cultural curios around 'the most i
nteresting things in the universe'. Using new and archive short and feat
ure film\, sound\, discussion\, performance and play\, each event explo
res a single theme from a variety of viewpoints. \n \nAt LSFF\, Rich Pi
ckings tackles the tricky topic of teenage sexuality - real\, perceived
and imposed - on screen. The programme takes us on a challenging journey
: Teenage artist Sadie Benning's Pixelvision films from the early nineti
es offer a compelling insight into the disturbing\, imaginative space on
the edge of womanhood while a selection of shorts from across the world
move from the sweet and nostalgic to the unsettling and downright upset
ting. The screening will be introduced by Dr Robin Anderson\, a child an
d adolescent psychiatrist. Following the screening Robin and several of
the filmmakers will be present for a discussion and Q&A around the work
 and the issues raised.\n \n www.richpickings.wordpress.com \n \nDr Robin
Anderson\n \nis a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis and a consu
ltant child and adolescent psychiatrist. He was formally head of the Ado
lescent Department at the Tavistock Clinic. He works in private practice
in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy for children and adults\, is a Visi
ting Lecturer at the Tavistock Clinic and provides a consultancy to adol
escent services.\n \nTHE INSTITUTE OF PSYCHOANALYSIS is the main UK prof
essional organisation for psychoanalysts in the UK and a global centre o
f excellence in the provision of psychoanalytic training\, education\, p
ublication and clinical practice. \n \nhref="http://psychoanalysis.org.u
 k">www.psychoanalysis.org.uk \n \nSadie Benning Videoworks: \n \nIn Joll
ies\, Benning gives a chronology of her crushes and kisses\, tracing the
development of her nascent sexuality. Addressing the camera with an air
of seduction and romance\, Benning allows the viewer a sense of her anx
iety and delight as she comes to realize her lesbian identity. In If Eve
ry Girl Had a Diary\, Benning trains her pixelvision camera on herself a
nd her room\, searching for a sense of identity and respect as a woman a
nd a lesbian. Acting alternately as a confessor and accuser\, the camera
here captures Benning's anger and frustration at feeling trapped by soc
ial prejudices. Me and Rubyfruit is based on a novel by Rita Mae Brown.
This tape chronicles the enchantment of teenage lesbian love. Recorded a
gainst a backdrop of pornographic images and phone sex ads\, Benning por
trays the innocence of female romance\, and the taboo prospect of female
marriage.\n \nWhen she was 16\, Benning stopped going to high school fo
r three weeks and stayed inside with her camera\, her TV set\, and a pil
e of dirty laundry. Living Inside mirrors her psyche during this time. W
ith the image breaking up between edits\, the rough quality of this earl
y tape captures Benning's sense of isolation and sadness\, her retreat f
rom the world. As such\, Living Inside is the confession of a chronic ou
tsider. In A New Year\, a version of the teenage diary\, Benning places
her feelings of confusion and depression alongside grisly tales of tablo
id headlines and brutal events in her neighborhood. The difficulty of fi
nding a positive identity for oneself in a world filled with violence is
starkly revealed by Benning's youthful but already despairing voice.

SUMMARY:Branchage and The Quietus present: Isolation
DESCRIPTION:A Live Soundtrack Event\; a co-production with the Roundhouse
\n \nThis atmospheric\, impressionistic documentary portrait centres on
the life of Stuart Griffiths\, an ex-Paratrooper\, who has since become
 a renowned social photographer.\n \nHe journeys through England\, encoun
tering ex-soldiers experiencing the physical and emotional scars of life
after the Army. We learn that a quarter of British ex-soldiers sleep ro
ugh when they return home\, and this bold and moving film explores the p
ersonal demons and uncertain futures faced by those soldiers. The film h
as a dreamy and visually stunning aesthetic that is riveting and Griffit
hs is an engaging narrator\; the people he speaks to\, including an asto
unding interview with injured soldier Simon Brown\, are honest and forth
coming. This vital and important document isn’t really about the moralit
y of war\, but much more about the treatment of those who fight in our n
 ame\; a vital and important document.\n \nLuke Seomore\, who wrote origi
nal music for the film\, will be performing this soundtrack live with mu
sicians Michael Garrad and David Stephens. This event was premiered at t
